At the top, the inscription LITTLE BIGHORN, A VAIN VICTORY recalls the battle of 1876, one of the best-known clashes between the Native peoples of North America and the United States Army. The seven notches on the rim stand for the 7th Cavalry Regiment in which Custer served.
